Committees

The FA has ten standing committees as established in the FA Bylaws Article X, as shown below. The current chair of each committee is indicated in parenthesis; if you're interested in serving on any of the committees, please contact the chair.

    as of 2021-22
    1. Professors on Wheels (Christina Bosco) — To develop and deliver educational programming and materials to Suffolk County residents, particularly to the elderly in nursing homes, senior centers, and assisted living facilities but also to libraries and community centers
    2. Community Outreach/Social Justice (Joan Wozniak) — To identify issues pertaining to justice, diversity, and equity in our communities around which awareness, support, and perhaps fundraising from the membership would be appropriate, giving primacy to issues impacting SCCC students or relating to education or labor
    3. New Member Program (Matt Pappas) — To develop and implement a program of activities and events designed to improve the experience of new FA members and welcome them into our union family by identifying professional and work-related needs of new members, pairing new hires with faculty mentors, and helping them adjust to college life and union involvement
    4. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (Joan Cook) — To raise awareness of and funds for the American Cancer Society to better prevent, detect, and fight breast cancer
    5. Health & Safety (Kevin McCoy) — To identify, assess, monitor, and report on workplace issues that impact the health and safety of our membership
    6. Member Excellence Awards (Nic Pestieau) — To develop and advertise an annual member excellence awards program, to collect and assess nominations, and to determine and announce award recipients once a year
    7. Political Action Committee (Dante Morelli) — To serve as the voice of the membership when communicating with elected representatives and to identify and support prospective and current elected representatives whose beliefs and records are aligned with the values of our academic union (both their stances on labor and on education)

Several FA committees are called into being in FA contract, including the following:

  2. Distance education committee (Cynthia Eaton)
  3. Class size (Dante Morelli)
  4. Calendar (Dante Morelli, Sophie Painchaud, Filiz Turhan-Swenson)
  5. Labor-management (several, called into being as needed)

Finally, in addition to the above committees, we also have three regularly elected delegates to the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) and American Federation of Teachers (AFT) conventions as well as other members who contribute to health of our union in a variety of other ways as shown below.
