Due Process and Grievances

Click any of the following questions to jump to the response. These are the most frequent questions we receive about due process and grievance issues, but if your specific question isn't answered here, please contact us!

How does the FA represent adjuncts when questions, issues, conflicts arise?    Do adjuncts have due process? What happens if I think I have a grievance?

How does the FA represent adjuncts when questions, issues, conflicts arise?

The FA provides extensive support for its adjunct faculty. As noted on the welcome page of the adjunct section of the FA website, you may contact your Executive Council representative (EC rep), one of the members of the FA Adjunct Committee, or the Adjunct Coordinator. When issues rise to the level of grievance (see below), they will be handled by the Grievance Officer.     [back to top]

Do adjuncts have due process?

Before being dropped from the seniority list, an adjunct who has served 10-14 semesters must receive an administrative evaluation. A second administrative evaluation is required only if the peer recommendation is different from the first administrative recommendation.

However, an adjunct who has served more than 14 semesters, must receive 2 administrative evaluations before being dropped from the seniority list. If the evaluations indicate that improvement is needed, then the adjunct will be given one semester to improve his/her performance. (If the recommendation to remove the adjunct from the seniority list is based on issues other than performance.      [back to top]

What happens if I think I have a grievance?

A complaint is an informal claim by an employee or the FA of improper, unfair, arbitrary, or discriminatory treatment. A complaint may, but need not, constitute a grievance, and is processed through an informal procedure. If you have a complaint or question, contact the FA Adjunct Coordinator at the FA Office, 631.451.4151.

A grievance is a violation, breach, misinterpretation or improper application of the contract, and the grievance procedure is a means of enforcing or administering the contract. If you believe that the college has violated a specific policy, of if you believe that your contractual rights have been violated, contact the Grievance Officer at the FA Office, 631.451.4151.

Grievances and complaints must be filed within 30 working days after the "violation" occurred.      [back to top]
