DE Policies and Procedures: Course Assignment
| |
|
Per Appendix J Section IV of our contract, as well as the 2005-2011 memo of agreement, the following rules apply to distance education courses with regards to class size.
Because fully online courses are especially susceptible to over-enrollment, please consult the FA Class Size Chart linked below and be aware of the class limits for your online classes. Notify the FA immediately if your class has too many students enrolled.
Details for each of the three DE modalities are below. |
|
|
Online Courses
- Online courses have a class size maximum of 2/3 the maximum for a corresponding or similar course taught in the traditional, on-campus environment. The Faculty Association website provides a chart with specific class size maximums; online courses follow the column labeled "SLN Limit": FA Class Size Chart.
- For new courses (i.e., courses that aren't currently in the college catalog) being developed specifically for fully online delivery, the class size maximum will be determined through existing college curriculum development procedures.
Hybrid/Blended Courses
- For the first time that a faculty member teaches a hybrid/blended course, the class size maximum will be 2/3 of the maximum for a corresponding or similar course taught in the traditional, on-campus environment.*
- For all subsequent times that a faculty member teaches a hybrid/blended course, the class size maximum will be 3/4 of the maximum for a corresponding or similar course taught in the traditional, on-campus environment.*
* However, no course shall have a class limit smaller than 20 with the understanding that no blended/hybrid course class size will be higher than its traditional, on-campus counterpart.
DL Classroom
- Courses taught in the DL classroom have a class size maximum determined by the size and seating allowable in the room on each campus.
