Earlier sunsets and cooler nights remind us that Breast Cancer Awareness Month is right around the corner.

Team FA has been participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk for many years now. Last year, your generous donations and a soggy but cheerful walk around the Eastern Campus enabled Team FA to raise $1,110 of the total $728,000 raised at the NYSUT Making Strides of Eastern Long Island walk.

This year’s fundraising event is dedicated to the memory of Sheila Goldberg. Sheila was a NYSUT retiree and activist. She was passionate about the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and is credited with founding the relationship between her local NYSUT in Nassau County and the American Cancer Society, which grew to include all regions across New York State.

As you may have heard, the challenges of Covid-19 have resulted in a decline of cancer screenings, amplifying our need to support the American Cancer Society more than ever this year. Your generous funds are used to support breast cancer research, free rides for treatments, lodging for those getting treatment, a 24/7 cancer helpline and patient navigators.

Currently, an in-person event is not planned for this October. As details are being worked out for virtual events, you can still show your support. In addition to a regular donation this year, for just $10 you can purchase a Garden of Hope pinwheel in honor, in memory or in support of a friend or loved one who has had cancer.
