Seeing with fresh eyes

In yoga there is a concept known as pratipaksha bhavana which loosely translates to "seeing with fresh eyes."

As we approach the end of the semester, this concept can help us through the busyness of the time as we more than likely are spending additional hours sitting, typically in front of computers.

Incorporating simple yoga tools like the breath on a regular basis can help maintain a sense of steadiness during stressful periods. The brief practice described below offers an opportunity to take a break so that our system is less drained.

  1. Sit comfortably and attentively in a chair with feet planted on the floor (or as depicted above).

  2. Rest your hands on your thighs with your palms facing up.

  3. Close your eyes and take a few breaths. Breathe through your nostrils; if there is congestion, it is ok to use the mouth.

  4. Place your thumb at the base of your index finger on each hand, with palms facing up.

  5. On inhale, move your thumb to the tip of your index finger and pause.

  6. On exhale, slide your thumb back down to the base of your index finger and pause.

  7. Repeat these movements on your middle, then ring, then pinky fingers.

  8. Continue for a total of two or three rounds.

  9. Observe how you feel at the end of doing the eight to twelve breaths.
