The arrival of a new spring semester means the promotion process will begin once again for our faculty members, both full time and adjunct.

Applying for promotion may seem like a daunting task, but the FA is here to assist all of our members who navigate the process.

In this article I provide basic information about eligibility, workshops and important dates. Please join me at one of the workshops so I can share more details and answer your questions.

Above and beyond

Promotion is an important recognition of the work of FA members who are consistently going above and beyond in their roles to support students and improve the efficiency and functionality of the many departments we serve. We know that our members—in classrooms and offices, on campus and online—are demonstrating to the larger community the value and excellence of what we have to offer current and prospective students.

Areas assessed during the promotion process include service to the college, service to the community, and personal and professional growth. In each of these areas, the promotion committee will look for documented evidence of each applicant’s work that goes above and beyond their core job description.

We strongly encourage anyone who is eligible to apply.

Eligibility

Those who meet the time-in-rank requirements as outlined in our promotions guidebook will receive notification from college administration. I share below, however, the pertinent timeframes for full-time and adjunct faculty so you can double check your eligibility status in terms of time in service.

Full-time faculty who are eligible to apply should receive a letter of eligibility in March or earlier from the office of their executive dean or respective vice president. Adjunct faculty members who are eligible to apply should receive notification in early February from Dean Gherardi’s office. Again, please review the time-in-rank requirements below to check your status.

Workshops and important dates & deadlines

Full-time and adjunct promotion workshops have been scheduled, both in person and on Zoom, for members interested in hearing more about the process or who have questions about their status. Because workshops offer very helpful information, all are encouraged to attend, even those who are not applying this semester.

If you are full time and plan to apply, remember that although the full application is not due until June 17, you must submit the cover page of the A form application by May 15, 2024, to your campus executive dean’s or respective vice president’s office.

See you at the workshops and, remember, I will be happy to assist all adjunct and full-time colleagues as you work through the process to apply for this significant recognition from the college.
