FYI: Updates from the Executive Council and other news of note

stack of newspapers
  • Retirement workshop a great success: The FA's annual retirement workshop, held on April 29, was packed full of informative and helpful advice from Mary Kaffaga of the Benefit Fund, Maggie Brown of EMHP and Gerry McGahran of Stacy Braun Associates. 37 members attended, and if you're an FA member who wasn't able to attend but would like to view the recording, contact FA Secretary Cynthia Eaton.

  • Opportunity to join Community Power Long Island: Community Power LI is using NYS's community distributed power generation paired with fuel cell technology to provide savings to union families while reducing carbon emissions (Sammy Chu of Community Power LI is a former IBEW Local 3 electrician and Suffolk County labor commissioner). All PSEG-LI customers who don't already have solar panels on their homes qualify to save 10% on your electric bill. Once you sign up and the fuel cell farm starts producing electricity, you'll begin saving on your monthly energy bill. Here are step-by-step instructions for how to sign up for Community Power LI.

  • FA and Benefit Fund summer hours: The FA office and the Benefit Fund will be open this summer but closed on Fridays. Given their various vacation days, it's always wise to call or email Anita (anita@fascc.org, 631-451-4151) or Mary (mary@fascc.org, 631-451-4323) before you swing by.

  • Summer 2022 adjunct, overload and other pay dates: According to payroll, most faculty working this summer can expect to be paid during the sessions during which they are working.

    » 1st six-week session (runs May 24 to July 6): June 16, June 30 and July 14

    » Eight-week session (runs May 24 to July 15): June 16, June 30, July 14 and July 28

    » 2nd six-week session (runs July 7 to August 12): July 28, August 11 and August 25

PA's, librarians, and members working summer OTA ten-week program and other* assignments will be paid on five of the summer payrolls—again, to the degree possible, during the summer sessions in which you're working: June 16, June 30, July 14, July 28, August 11 and August 25. Payroll indicates that we cannot be more more specific than this because not all PA schedules were provided to HR in a timely fashion. (* Other includes auto, special projects, reassigned time, coordinators, distance ed and applied instrumentalists.)

Similarly, counselors will be paid based on scheduled work assignments on six summer payrolls: June 16, June 30, July 14, July 28, August 11 and August 25. The September 8 pay date will be included where appropriate.

Members participating in this summer's eLearning Academy will be paid on the following four pay dates: June 30, July 14, July 28 and August 11.

Applied instrumentalists will follow the eight-week session payroll schedule. Librarians, SOT and other (except eLearning Academy and applied instrumentalists) will be paid over six pay dates with the last one being August 25.

Summer PAR (Paramedic) program has two payrolls on June 16 and June 30

  • 2022-23 holidays: Normally we include the holiday and N & U days schedule for the upcoming academic year so that our members can plan. However, that is still being finalized by administration, so please watch your SCCC email closely for that to be distributed as a college brief.
  • Fall 2022 classes start dates: Please note that day, evening and online classes for this fall begin on September 1, Saturday classes begin September 10 and Sunday classes begin September 11. The full fall 2022 calendar can be found on the SCCC website.

  • EC meeting dates: EC representatives should plan to attend monthly meetings in the upcoming academic year on the following dates, unless otherwise informed. Most meetings are held on Thursdays at 3:45. We anticipate that we will meet in person as well as enable EC reps to join via Zoom for the 2022-23 academic year.
