The Write Time: Providing a distraction-free space for faculty research and scholarship
Sarah Kain Gutowski

the write time - clock

While we place a great deal of our effort into teaching at SCCC, the college is a stronger, smarter institution when our faculty participate in research and scholarship on a regional, national and global level.

Setting aside time for this participation in the face of teaching and service demands, however, can be challenging—and much of it depends on the writing we do, from proposals and queries to abstracts and articles.

You may not consider yourself a writer, but if you’re engaged in research or scholarship, chances are you require the same elements most important to a writer: time and space in which to devote yourself, wholly and without distraction, to putting your thoughts (and findings) into words.

The FA recognizes that writing, scholarship and research inform and refresh our teaching and our roles here in essential ways. Therefore we’ve implemented a new initiative to help faculty pursue these ends.

Once a month in the fall and spring semesters, the Mildred Green Room or the Eaton’s Neck Room in the Babylon Student Center (Ammerman Campus) has been reserved for faculty to devote time and space to writing. Bring your notepads, pens, looseleaf paper, laptops, books, etc.—and be prepared to work in a quiet, shared space for two hours alongside colleagues who also need to compartmentalize their time and effort.

Coffee and tea, essential fuel for most writers, will be served. And to better serve you, please let us know in advance if you plan to attend: contact Anita by phone (451-4151) or email (anita@fascc.org).
