SCC Faculty Association - Promotion FAQ

It's observation time, and if you are being considered for academic promotion, retention or continuing appointment, you should contact your College Personnel Committee (CPC) representative and/or the Peer Personnel Committee (PPC) person for your area or campus. Your PPC rep (a Unit III member) will observe your class and complete the appropriate "B" form. It's advisable to arrange to have a PPC rep present whenever an administrator has scheduled a classroom observation.

It's also important to familiarize yourself with the Guidelines of College Personnel Committee and Peer Personnel Committees. This booklet (containing everything you ever wanted to know about the procedures, methods, etc., of the CPC and PPC's) is available from your Executive Council or CPC representative.

Your Division/Campus rep will also have copies of the appropriate "B" forms. Just a reminder: faculty members have a right to respond to any part of a written observation.

Excerpts from the Guidelines:

All faculty who have applied for academic promotion must be evaluated. Evaluation by the PPC is not mandatory for term or continuing appointments, but is strongly recommended.

All members of Unit III, Unit IV and administrative exempt personnel who are being considered for academic promotion shall be evaluated by their appropriate PPC as part of the promotion process.

PPC reps should also interview people who are applying for part-time or full-time employment on their campuses or in their departments. The PPC chairperson has the contractual right to inspect all applications for positions in his/her department or area as maintained by the Dean of Instruction (or appropriate administrator) and to make recommendations for interviews.

Elections for PPC reps are currently being held in most areas/disciplines.
